If you are opting for stem-cell enriched PRP treatment 40mls of blood will be taken and processed using the patented Cervos system. Approximately 4-6mls of highly concentrated PRP will be used to directly treat the affected joint. local anaesthetics will be used to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. The skin is double sterilized with isopropyl alcohol and iodine (Betadine ) and a strict "no touch" technique is used to ensure sterility.
We ask patients to stop all anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 72 hours before and after treatment.
Opting for bone marrow harvesting means the area will be double sterilized and then local anaesthetic containing lignocaine and adrenalin will be injected over many planes to achieve minimal discomfort. Patients will note a little pressure as the trochar is introduced into the marrow space and a slightly uncomfortable twinge as the marrow is extracted.
Bone marrow is one of the best sources of stem cells. These can be injected directly into the joint or suspended in PRP; this yielding the benefit of additional growth factors, regenerative proteins and stromal derived factor one alpha to guide the stem cells to target.
After the procedure local anesthetics will take care of pain relief for the first couple of hours. Most of our patients have found they need no/ minimal analgesia. Paracetamol if required is the drug of choice. Some patients opt to take codeine or tramadol for 24 hours.
We suggest patients take things gently (ie no strenuous activity) for 72 hours and then it's back to normal activities .
Do not anticipate any improvement for 14 days post treatment. Improvements will then increase out to 6 months when they will stabilize. The treatment effectiveness is enduring with many of our patients reporting on going symptomatic improvement at 10 years and beyond.
